Notre Dame adds former Wisconsin starting QB Jack Coan as transfer

With Ian Book likely moving on to the NFL, Notre Dame has added a veteran quarterback to its roster.

Jack Coan, a graduate transfer from Wisconsin, announced Monday night that he is heading to South Bend to join the Irish. Coan started 18 games over a two-year span for the Badgers, but missed the 2020 season due to a foot injury.

The 6-foot-3, 221-pound Coan, a four-star recruit in 2017, started four games for Wisconsin as a redshirt freshman in 2018 after an injury to Alex Hornibrook. Coan wasn’t asked to throw much that season as the team primarily relied on Jonathan Taylor in the running game.

In 2019, though, Coan had a really solid season for the Badgers. Taylor was still the focal point of UW’s offense, but Coan was a very efficient player. In 14 starts, Coan threw for 2,727 yards, 18 touchdowns and five interceptions while completing 69.6% of his throws. Coan was under center in the team’s loss to Ohio State in the Big Ten title game and then helped the Badgers beat Oregon in the Rose Bowl.

Coan entered 2020 as the projected starter but suffered a foot injury during preseason. The injury opened the door for prized freshman Graham Mertz to move into the starting spot. Coan was reportedly healthy late in the season, but Mertz continued to start games. After the year, Coan put his name into the transfer portal to pursue other options.

At Notre Dame, Coan, who will be immediately eligible, joins a quarterback room with very little experience due to Book holding the starting role over the past four years. The other scholarship quarterbacks on the roster are sophomore Drew Pyne, junior Brendon Clark and incoming freshman Tyler Buchner, a four-star recruit.

When Book was briefly knocked out of the College Football Playoff semifinal against Alabama last week, Pyne came in for a few plays and completed the only pass he threw for seven yards.

20 must-read health books
The Health section of your local bookstore or online book retailer looks different than it did a couple of decades ago, when titles like Food-Free at Last: How I Learned to Eat Air or The South Beach Diet Supercharged were popular picks.
